Venue:  The Ohio State University, Ohio Union and Blackwell Inn

Welcome message

The MathPsych/ICCM 2025 organizing committee invites abstracts for talks, posters, and symposia to be presented at the 58th Annual Meeting of the Society for Mathematical Psychology (MathPsych) and the 23rd International Conference on Cognitive Modeling (ICCM) at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, USA.

The dates of the conference are July 25 to 29, 2025. July 25, 2025, will be dedicated to workshops, and a Women of Mathematical Psychology-sponsored Professional Development Symposium Event. Talks and keynotes will take place July 26 to 28, 2024. The annual ACT-R Workshop will also be held at Ohio State University on July 29, 2025.

The conference showcases leading research on mathematical and computational theories of human cognition. We welcome contributions from the complete spectrum of formal approaches to modeling cognition, including connectionism, symbolic modeling, dynamical systems, Bayesian modeling, and cognitive architectures.

Travel guidance

The local host Ohio State University provides updated information on recent legislative action and executive orders, including those that apply to international travel and immigration. Be sure to check their website for up-to-date information, especially for international conference attendees:

Please note the following to assist in planning your conference attendance:
  • For attendees who prefer not to travel with personal laptops, phones, or other devices, note that we will provide presentation laptops in the conference session rooms. There are also computers in The Blackwell business offices that are free to use for hotel guests.
  • There are nearby locations for poster printing, including several on-campus poster printers, as well as FedEx and local printing options close to campus.
  • For presenters who have registered for the conference but are unexpectedly unable to make it to the in-person conference, please contact the conference organizers as soon as possible so that we can arrange alternative ways for you to present.
  • For authors and registered attendees, an official letter of invitation to obtain a visa is available on your user mathpsych.org user profile under Certificates and invitations. For visa purposes, you may be asked for proof that you are attending a meeting or convention, so it may be useful to have a copy of the conference agenda and/or registration on hand. If you have a need for a more specific certification or invitation, please contact us and we will try to provide what you need.

We aim to try to accommodate everyone who would like to attend. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any specific concerns or questions at conferencecommittee@mathpsych.org.

In addition to the information provided on these pages and by the US Department of State, we would also like to recommend:
  • Ensure your passport is up to date. Many countries require that your passport be valid for 6 months after your scheduled return date, even if it has not expired.
  • Check whether your health insurance provider covers you while you travel. If it does not, you may want to consider (low-cost) travel medical insurance.
  • Make sure that you have a saved or hard copy of your boarding passes, embassy contact information, ID pages of your passport, emergency contacts, hotel information, and other travel information.
  • Be sure to declare any items that may cause concern for US Customs and Border Patrol agents. This includes gifts, food items, medications, and currency that is in excess of allowed amounts. If you are not sure, declare the item. Be prepared to answer routine questions regarding your travel plans and destinations. Have your documentation ready to show to the customs officer.
  • The US government has recently increased border security, and this has resulted in several recent  reports of individuals traveling to the US being denied entry or detained. Consequently, several countries have issued warnings about traveling to the US, especially for transgender people, people who have expressed negative views of the current US administration, and people who are nationals of (or visitors to) countries listed in the OSU website:
  • The Blackwell and Ohio Union have available public and eduroam wifi. Connect ONLY to trusted Wifi connections. These should be published or available from the conference staff, your hotel, or the conference venue. Make sure that your phone and computer are secured with a password or PIN, and consider a VPN or firewall where necessary.
  • Backup your phone data to the Cloud to make sure that you can access contacts and other important data if your phone is lost or stolen.
  • Make sure that you carry documentation for any prescription medications, especially narcotics or psychotropic drugs, and ensure you have enough to cover your entire trip.

Conference workshops. There will be two workshops hosted on the morning of July 25th, one MathPsych and one ICCM hosted workshop. Both will take place at the Blackwell Inn & Conference Center. Here are the descriptions of the two workshops -- be sure to indicate which ones you would like to attend when you register for the conference!

Workshop #1. Bringing Cognitive Modeling Up to Speed with Simulation-Based Inference, a tutorial approach: Simulation based inference (SBI) is an emerging and transformative paradigm for statistical inference, driving model-based insight in a variety of research domains. Traditional statistics education implicitly relies on likelihood functions as the backbone of parameter inference for computational models. However, deriving analytical likelihoods is often infeasible, even for models that are simple to simulate. SBI circumvents this challenge by enabling parameter inference directly from simulation code, eliminating the need for explicit likelihood derivations. Recent advances in computational statistics, deep learning, and user-friendly software have supercharged SBI. In psychology and cognitive science, these developments have made it possible to infer parameters for a wide range of cognitive models. Many of these models were of long-standing theoretical interest but remained untestable due to the lack of efficient inference methods. As a result, our research community has now gained access to a much larger array of computational models that can be routinely tested against data. This workshop aims to guide participants from principles to practice. It will provide attendees with a comprehensive overview of the landscape of SBI techniques as well as a hands-on path from simulation to parameter estimation, using a large basket of methods and covering multiple practical use cases. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the current ecosystem of tools for SBI, the strengths and limitations of specific SBI techniques for different use cases, and the potential synergies between conceptual approaches and existing software libraries.

Workshop #2. High performance computing for dynamical systems and Bayesian estimation with on-demand computing resources: Cognitive modeling often requires high computational resources. Complex models must often be run for long periods of time, and experiments must often be repeated. Many researchers limit their models and designs to meet these computational restrictions, however using the right tools, models can be distributed and scaled to meet the computational requirements of the most complex models. In this workshop, we aim to show a flexible and scalable modeling environment that can be used in both local settings, and High Performance Computing (HPC) Clusters. We will present and make use of the Julia programming language, some of its tools for modeling dynamical systems, and Bayesian parameter estimation, as well as the methods to offload workloads from your desktop to HPC clusters.
